Please let her be dead…

Seven kilometres out of Wattle Springs, in broad daylight, she dives out in front of me. Her heavy body bounces off the bumper and shattered glass fills the windscreen. My dusty wagon moves in slow motion, skidding across the tarmac until it finally comes to a halt. It takes a second for me to realise that the loud, heavy breath that fills the barren, silent landscape, is mine.

Please let her be dead.

Although the rest of me is frozen, hot tears erupt from my eyes. Surprisingly, these were not the first I'd shed on this road trip. Driving along Waterfall Way, the scenic route from the coast, had felt like travelling through Pluto's Underworld, like i was an abducted Persephone. With my damaged headlights, i was barely able to see what was ahead of me. Under this starless night, a deep, terrified wailing had began somewhere deep inside me; and thoughts of the divorce of my thirteen-year marriage earlier in the year, filled my head. The pain in my chest rode shot-gun.
